Steroids are synthetic substances that are similar to male
sex hormones. They are used to enhance muscle growth and develop sexual
characteristics attributed to males. They are typically prescribed by medical
professionals to treat certain conditions, including delayed puberty, muscle
atrophy and even impotence.
The problem with steroids is that they are often abused,
particularly by athletes and bodybuilding professionals and enthusiasts, mainly
to hasten muscle growth and improve athletic performance. Abuse can also lead
to unpleasant and even life-threatening conditions. As a result, more and more
people are turning to alternatives to steroids to help them with their
bodybuilding routine and improve their endurance.
Are there alternatives to steroids?
Yes, there are. In 2004, the U.S. Congress approved a law
regarding the amendment of the act that covered the production of anabolic
steroids, a controlled substance. As a result, research and development efforts
have focused on finding and producing legal alternatives to steroids that are
not only safer but also healthier. Some of these include:
Protein supplements
Typically available in powder form, protein supplements are
generally safe to use and have the least number of side effects, if any. The
most common sources for these powders are soy or whey, making them an excellent
option for vegans and those who are lactose intolerant.
Creatine
Creatine is a type of amino acid that occurs naturally in
the human body, allowing it to perform its functions properly. The substance
seems effective in increasing muscle volume, an ideal result for both
body-builders and athletes. Creatine also seems effective in increasing
athletic performance but only for short, quick bursts. It hasn't proven
effective in increasing endurance. Although the body produces the substance, it
can also be supplemented from food sources. It is not regulated, however, and
there are certain side effects to watch out for in case of high or excessive
dosage.
L-Glutamine
L-Glutamine is a type of amino acid supplement that enhances
muscle volume by regulating the synthesis of protein in the body. It has also
been shown to be effective in helping muscles recuperate faster in case of
injuries or after a workout.
DHEA
DHEA or dehydroepiandrosterone is another substance that
occurs naturally in the human body. It is known as a hormone precursor, a
substance that preps the body for later production of the sex hormones
estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. As a supplement, DHEA is frequently
used for treatment of adrenal fatigue. Although it's one of the most popular
alternatives to steroids, it is recommended that it's taken with the
supervision of a physician so the dosage is maintained and levels in the body
are regulated.
